JAVA ISLAND

java island, the nation's cultural and politics capital, is a varied landscape of small villages and dazzling modern citra. in 1817, sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, then Lieutenant governor of java, write of the island's attributes as being the most romantic and highly diversified in the world
Word that hold true even today.
Java is and island of contrasts, nightly activity is dividen between enchanting wayang kulit puppet performances and all night dancing at discos in the nation's capital.
Courtly dance and gamelan is performed with a subtle passion while others pour their energy into working the rice fields and scratching out of living
At its heart is a strong spiritual foundation mixed with adat or tradition
For most visitors, the first introduction to Java is Jakarta, the sprawling capital city and nucleus of Indonesia, center of businnes, finance, politics and contemporary art.
A bustling metropolis, the population of roughly 20 milion people live among glittering sky scrapers and Mercedes Cars that stand alongside historical enclaves and pockets of shanty communities
The Pulse of the countrys tumultuous economic and political elimate is gauged here.
The drama of Jakarta gives way to larger Java, a patchwork landscape of rice fields, jungle and volcanic peak spread over 50.000sq km, roughly the size of england or florida
Almost half the inhabitants are Farmers, living in traditional villages and working the most productive land area in the world.
Ideal for irrigation cultivation, Java is endowed with fertile soil from nutrient rich ash deposits from any one of the 30 active volcanoes scattered throughout the island
Java long history dates back one million years to mans early acestor Java man or homo erectus
Central Java is home to 8th and 9th Century buddhist and Hindu temples, most notably borobudur
Java's golden age occurred durring the time of the Hindu Majapahit kingdom in the 14th Century
Conversion to Islam took place during the 16th century, while the 17th century brought in the Dutch who remained as coloniser for the next 350 years.
The matrix of modern Java is influenced by fusion of foreign, religious and cultural ideas
The Javanese, the main ethnic group, maintain a highly developed culture rich in language, social behaviour and performing arts, while the west dwelling Sundanese are more earthy and devotedly islamic
proud madurese occupy the north east and small pockets of Badui and tengger people live in remote regions
a sixth group, the betawi, is know as native jakartans
Coastal Cities are a melting pot of outer islanders, indians, Chinese and Arabs

INDONESIA

wholesale the aeroplane increasingly naked exploring this vast country reasonably ceritain and tidy, Indonesia is one of those land that, if the imagination is permitted to ramble, is best explored on the ground and over the water.
It is a country of 18.110 islands, large and small, which wraps itself around one - eighth of the world circumference and begs to be travelled by boat
Indonesia capital city Jakarta, in unquestionably the only true metropolis in the country
Nestled on Java north western coast, itu is not especially beautiful by day, but at night its  electrified skyline can be elegant.
To many Indonesians  it is the city of hope, the one place that best exemplifies a prosperous and united Indonesia.

Java is home to nearly half of nation population , no mystery considering the land's lush volcanic landscape
Here, one finds some of the country most elegant aesthetic edeavours : music, dance, and drama, textiles and architecture.

Sumatra is where source traders and Islam first anchored after passage from India, and later, from Europe
The soil is not especially good for farming, althouhg volcanos exist here as well
But there are Verdant jungles, wondrous gatherings of wildlife, and perhaps Indonesia's most independent ethnic groups.

East of Java lies Bali, which needs little introduction since most foreign visitor seem to head there directly
Behind Bali is Lombok and then  Nusa tenggara, or what the Colonial European called the lesser sundas. From here eastward, the islands are tiny, at least until one reaches new Guinea, the western half of which belongs to Indonesia. Called Papua ( formerly irian jaya ), it was a land of unknown peoples and mountain valleys until early in the 20th Century

Due north of Java is Kalimantan, Indonesians portion of the mystical island of Borneo. Kalimantan was once synonymous with remoteness, inaccessibility and headhunters, today it suggest Timber wealth and oil frontiers

This leaves Sulawesi and Maluku, Sulawesi is home  to unique tribe who Bury their dead in the limestone cliffs, leaving behind wooden effigies to protect them. The original spice islands, at one time only in Maluku did nutmeg, cloves and mace grow, making these islands am obsession of European national

Although the country remains for the large part a safe and desirable tourist destination, visitor would do well to stay informed abouth the trouble spots and to avoid them
Take along large doses of common sense, which Will stand you in good stead
